my first flash mob

tonight i went to another lff film. probably will be my last due to money and lack of available tickets. (my other two films were 'pizza' and 'garden state' hell yeah. zach braff came and talked about the movie he made and i loved. rock it.) anyway, tonight's film was called 'cinevardaphoto' by this french woman...agnes varda. 3 shorts within the entire film. the first one was about this woman names ydessa from toronto. she collects things. especially photos of people and their teddy bears. there was an exhibit in munich and varda liked it so much she wanted to make a little docu about it. quite cool. to check out a bit about varda and the bears:

http://www.conceptmechanics.com/cinemascope/ar_picard_varda.htm

the second bit was about a picture varda took called 'ulysses' and the third bit was a montage of pictures from cuba. she had some cha cha music in the background and played the different b&w prints like a flipbook so they were dancing to the music. this bit was in subtitles but i didn't bother. liked watching the photos dance...chachacha....

my flatmate hu was going to go to this film, but had another engagement, so he gave the ticket to me. i'm really happy about that because it forced me to go to a movie by myself. yea. good job.

the man who was sitting next to me and offered me a piece of gum (which i took by the way) starting dozin' during the seconf bit and did a light snore during parts of the cubano bit. when the final credits rolled, i told him that i caught him snoozin'. he laughed and said he hadn't gotten much sleep today.

as i left the national film theatre, the typical london rain started to fall. made my way to waterloo station a bit wet, but a smile continued on my face because i happened upon my very first flash mob. which is a random (well not really, they all get this text messages telling them what to do and when and where) gathering of people. middle of waterloo station and there are a group of people dancing and silently singing along to their ipods. i mean, this was a full-on boogie. cool.

i like flash mobs.

red string around finger

quick notes so i don't forget. the thames river at night is a beautiful thing. makes me think of paris, which i shouldn't because i'm in london and that is way cooler than thinking i am somewhere else. i've got those "always have to be somewhere else" issues.

there was this man outside the national film theater's cafe (next to the river). he had this boombox in a plastic bag and played a maxwell house coffee can to its beat. one might think he was just another crazy man looking for change, but this guy didn't look like he needed money. it was weird. he received a phone call and turned down the music so he could listen to the person on the other end. how considerate of him. we had to listen to his music, but since he needed to have a little quiet, he turned down the music. definately in his own world. during his dance to music and shouting to the public (mind you, it was very quiet shouting though, barely could make out what he was saying) a couple of young girls came up and asked where the party was. he got all offended and told them to leave him alone. they were bothering him. it was quite the little scene to watch. he actually picked up all of his stuff and moved down to the next planter-thingy.

anyway, i was out in front of the nft because megan and i went to see "pizza." it's london film fest and there are loads and loads of movies playing. this one starred ethan embry (you'll remember him as the super-adorable preston or mark/c from empire records) and directed by mark christopher whom i found out also directed 54 with ryan phillipe and mike meyers. the movie was quite funny and really enjoyable. as an added treat, the director happened to be in the audience as well. at the end of the film, i really felt obligated to clap....i liked it and wanted to let him know. he did a little q and a at the end. mentioned that he really wanted the whole us "university town" vibe to the movie. basing it on iowa city and madison...woohoo. 'cept i didn't really feel the whole university town vibe. nice that he was thinking about it though. i just thought it was all and all very cool that he was there.

tomorrow i'm heading to a small book publishing fair. holborn tube. red lion square. i'll be there. with my short hair. umkay.

also, miss kimmy crandall is going to be taking a break from teaching in france and will be joining me in london. yea! must remember to pick her up at waterloo.....waterlooooo.....6pm.....don't forget kim...don't forget

night sounds

remember mr. wizard? that guy was A OK. i was just watching the matrix on channel five (we only have 5 channels over here and apparently even that is illegal because we don't have a tv license). i swear keanu called tank "mr. wizard"

tonight we are having our first proper thunderstorm. it only thundered once, but there have been bits of lighting and it is raining very hard. i'm going to try to keep my window open tonight to hear the sound of the rain. this might be a bad idea though since tonight is also the fresher's party at fabric. fabric is a nightclub over here in central northeast london. supposed to be a pretty big deal. tickets were really expensive and i didn't care enough to go. most of my flatmates are there though and i have a feeling i'll get a rude awakening in a few hours time. i have class at 930am and have to be up early, so i'm not really looking forward to that.

keep on
